Giuliano Briganti (1918-1992) was one of the most important art historians of the twentieth century. He graduated in 1940 with a thesis about Pellegrino Tibaldi and he dedicated his entire career to the study of various artistic movements, such as Baroque and Vedutismo. His historical-artistic formation has been strongly influenced by outstanding figures, first of all Roberto Longhi, with whom he started the magazine Paragone Arte.

The portion of the museum complex called Palazzo Squarcialupi is the result of the actions of  restoration and definition of the spaces that, starting from the mid-14th century, were intended for the reception of women and abandoned children. 

The Giuliano Briganti Library and Phototheque renews its appointment with the DOPPIO SENSO biennial, the collective exhibition of artist's books now in its 4th edition, entitled INK AND COLOR.

On the occasion of the exhibition's closing, on Friday, June 6 we are offering a finissage made up of several moments throughout the day. The artist will be present at the finissage. 

On the occasion of the fifth edition of the Festival Voci Migranti, the Biblioteca e Fototeca Giuliano Briganti hosts from 24 to 31 October the work Oh Good! by the artist Moustapha Cessay, created as part of the project Le Valigie Digitali.

A workshop between poetry and photography: image and word meet to tell the invisible. From 22 November 2025 to 14 February 2026, through in-person and online meetings, participants will translate poetic texts into visual works. The program will conclude with an exhibition, a fanzine, or a collective book.

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, promoted by the Ministry of Culture, the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex offers a rich program of guided tours and activities for children.

Reading is an emotional and transformative experience, capable of stimulating reflection and inner well-being. The reading group Nessun libro è uguale all’altro, active since 2021 at the Giuliano Briganti Library, promotes dialogue and sharing among readers.

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Santa Maria della Scala will be open for free from 7 PM to midnight for the European Night of Museums. Visitors can explore the museum and enjoy a pink gin and tonic in honor of the Giro d’Italia.

On Thursday, November 28, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, a commemorative event will be held to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the official birth of Surrealism (Manifeste du Surréalisme, André Breton 1924) with a tribute to a great master of the 20th century, Fabrizio Clerici (Milan 1913-Rome 1993), a fine intellectual, graduated in architecture, and an eclectic artist, active as an illustrator, engraver, painter, set designer, and costume designer.
