La Corticella

The so-called 'Corticella' is a true junction of the hospital pathways, situated at the intermediate level between Piazza Duomo and the rooms at the level of Piazzetta della Selva. This function was already served in ancient times, if we consider that here the 'internal road' (that is, the public road incorporated into the hospital and become a true internal connecting route) intersected with the path that descended from Piazza Duomo through the Porta dei Vetturali. The hospital's bakery was likely located here; the spaces around the courtyard were used as reception areas for pilgrims when the wards on the upper floor were not sufficient.
